They did a good set and their 12'' shows improvment since their demo. When on top kids really go off to their music and last night was one of those nights.

Finally Commitment Crew is starting to the recognition they deserve. Last night was the first time kids reacted in the way that is suiting. The new songs sound great and Kalles speaches between songs are priceless. Get their LP, the best swedish hardcore record in years.

Hårda Tider played the best set so far by any band at our new venue and I wouldn't want to have been in Dirty Money's shoes hving to follow them. They covered Warzone and kids actually knew the words. When we (Fuse) covered them a few years back it seemed like no one had ever heard of the NY legends. Perhaps there is hope for the kids?

Here's a video from their set, filmed by Henriik:

Dirty Money turned out to be cool dudes, at least on the football pitch today, but they seemed to have a good attitude on stage as well. They seemed overwhelmed by the reaction that they got and the show as a whole. A friend said that it was as if they played the same song 15 times. Perhaps there is something to that but if they're having fun and kids like them, why not?

No to the most important part of the event: The football. We gathered at 12 today, close to my apartment. A total of nine people played (seven swedes and two english lads). I played with the english and xSTx against Noa from Anchor, Erik, Aida and two kids that I have never seen before. We won the game and it was a lot of fun but next time i'd like to see more people playing. After all, football is one of the most important things in life.

Law And Order fanzine

Look out! Monday I visited Jönköping to see Big Deal, Angers Curse, Sista Sekunden and Trash Talk.

Big Deal is fast becoming one of the better bands in Sweden. Still not polished enough, especially the fast parts, but certainly improving since we played with them in Jönköping a few months ago. The crowd really responded well to them, very well deserved. The 7' should be out soon.

Angers Curse have two new members and it seems like that was exactly what the needed, a fresh injection in the form of two older guys that know what hardcore is all about. They were really good but covering the song "Righteous Jams"? Nah, that's like playing "Just one".

Sista Sekunden are amazing and one of the best bands in Sweden in the past years. In Jönköping they weren't as good as when they played in Gothenburg but even when they're not on top they're still better than most...

I'm not into Trash Talk at all but what a fucking set they played. Kids went apeshit and tore that place apart. A few great stage dives and constant mosh from side to side.

Tuesday it was time for Soul Control, Balance and Slut På Det Roliga in Gothenburg. Slut På det Roliga were a lot better than I thought. The singer probaly need some experiance talking between songs... They covered Minor Threat's "Seing red" and that's always a plus.

Balance is out touring for what seems like forever and they can't be on their best every night. They weren't bad in anyway but I have seen them with a lot more energy. On any given night they are still one of the five best bands in Sweden. They'll be back in Gothenburg soon with new releases. so be on the lookout for upcoming shows.

Soul Control are one of those bands that don't get enough attention. I saw them in Orlando this past winter and most of the crowd had already left by the time they played. Now they have a new drummer and a new singer and they are better than ever. 90's hardcore for the second millenium.

Way Out West

For a long long time I have waited for a chance to see Band Of Horses, one of the most exciting bands in the world at the moment. When Way Out West announced that one of Seattle's finest would once again visit the city of Gotheburg nothing was going to stop me from seeing them, not even the entance of 900 sek.

Band Of Horses played every song that I wanted them to play, with The Funeral and Ode to lrc as highlights of the set. As usual the crowd was a mix of beards, flannels, glases, stupid haircuts and anything else that migh make someone look alternative. Fuck seing bands at festivals. People smoking, talking, not looking at the bands and acting strange makes me want to throw up. It's difficult to focus on the amazing Band Of Horses but I'm still glad I got to see them live. Another band to cross out on the list.

Glasvegas is probaly the most talked about band in the past year, something that considering thier strong debut album isn't strange at all. Daddy's gond Go square go was the best songs of the evening and the band had the crowd in the palm of their hand.

Way Out West is still going on just outside my window (almost anyway). Tonight Adolecents is playing five minutes from my apartment but I'm not abel to go. Fuck.

Five years ago

Well, almost five years anyway, I'm a few days early. Since I'm stranded at my parantes for a few days without records to review or shows to attend I figured that I'd post a few videos, starting with this modern classic. Commitment Crew played a really good set, one of the best I have seen them play. They opened up with "Rise above", the only cover of the night. Whatever heppened to playing covers?

Whenever Commitment Crew's LP hits the stores pick it up. I think they are the best hardcore band in Sweden (well, Hårda Tider might be better...) and they have a, for Sweden, original sound. When their demo was released I was excited to see a fresh band step into the light. “Kid till death” was a great song that in a way summarizes the feeling of hardcore and at the same time brought Youth Of Today back to life. The 7’ that followed was alright but the band never took off in the way that I expected. I guess they didn’t have “it”. One Voice broke up and their legacy isn’t that much to speak of. Replaceable and third category youth crew and I honestly think that there are better new bands around that Crucial Response could have signed instead and done a 7’ with.

I would only recommend Break Free to kids that collect Crucial Response or youth crew records.

Stay Hungry

Sounds like shit during the fast part but alright in the end and throughout the cover. A terrific exampel of what every show should be like. A summarize of everything that's great about hardcore. Last night truly lived up every possible expectation and even went beyond them. Three bands, three great bands even, lots of people, lots of friends, a good venue and a positive feeling in the air. What else do you need.

The only thing that bothered me was that GBG heroes COMMITMENT CREW didn't get a better response. Perhaps they´re too old school for all the young kids. However, it's always fun to see them on stage, and I'm seeing them tonight as well!

BALANCE response was just overwhelming. After just two songs Ulfs guitar broke and they had to take a 15 minute break to fix it (he's left handed). It would be easy to lose momentum in a situation like that but if anything things got crayzier when they took the stage for the second time. Their 7' was released today on Not Just Words, don't miss out.

What could be said about BANE that havn't been said already. They are absolutely inspiring and they have so many great songs that they could have gone on for a lot longer than they did. To follow after BALANCE had torn Club China apart isn't easy but BANE gave it their all and obviously enjoyed themselves. Stage dives throughout the whole set, sing a longs and we even got to witness the LKPG classic, the crocodile.

If you weren't there you missed out!

Review archive updated

We've updated our review archive with no less than 23 reviews! I first heard them one year ago and fell in love instantly. Last night I saw them live for the first time. I went to Musikens Hus in Gotheburg with enormous expectations, but as let down. More about that later...

Walkning to the venue from my car, about 100 meters away, I saw the first sign of trouble as two guys were fighting in the street. Soon three friends dragged their peer away from a situation that could have turned ugly. Down the street, by Musikens Hus, three squad cars and one bus were lined up with policemen in the street. I expected a hostile atmosphere but when I met up with my friends outside the venue it seemed to have calmed down.

Inside it was hot as hell as UNIT LOST took the stage. I only watched a few songs as their streetpunk didn't do much for me., waiting outside again for the main attraction of the evening seemed like a better idea.

When GATANS LAG stepped on stage there were lots of people inside and up front, although a bit less than expected. Perhaps the high entrance (320 sek) was to much for some. As soon as they started playing kids started dancing and singing along. I personally was excited as well, but my excitement turned into frustration. Equipment failure continued all through their set, and momentum was lost. But what was even worse was the fact that it seemed as if they hadn't rehearsed at all, definitely the sloppiest set I have seen in a long time and a huge disappointment. Thanks to their song being as good as they are I was still able to enjoy the set to some extent. If these guys want to reclaim the spot as the best band in Sweden they will have to improve their performance on stage.

WHEN WE FALL
We untrue our minds (CD)
I for us

I first discovered WHEN WE FALL on the compilation “What we built” released by Dead Eyed Records some years ago. I soon picked up their demo and then bought their debut MCD “A cry in despair” the same week it was released. Their hardcore is emotional, melodic and aggressive at the same time. If you like bands like HAVE HEART and SHAI HULUD you should really check them out! On “We untrue our minds” they take their sound even further. They’ve added organ, accordion and electronic beats in some of the songs and that takes their music into new dimensions. Big plus for the varied vocals as well. You might think of REFUSED, but shouldn’t. This is not the new “The shape of punk to come”, this is WHEN WE FALL anno 2008 delivering modern emotional hardcore their way! Check it out!

WHEN WE FALL at MySpace

Review by Micke Persson

Anchor

ANCHOR
The quiet dance (CD)
Catalyst

This must be one of the hardest working bands in the Swedish hardcore-scene today. They formed early 2007 from the ashes of SET MY PATH and DAMAGE CONTROL. They toured with RITUAL only two months after the band formed and released their critically acclaimed debut MCD/7” “Captivity songs” some months later. They also managed to team up with their friends in THE KIND THAT KILLS for a split 7” the same year. Now it’s 2008 and I’m holding their debut full-length CD in my hands. I mean, three releases in one and half year of existence is really remarkable! I really loved their debut and had really high expectations for this first full-length. And, damn, I only needed to hear the intro to be convinced that they’ve made it again! Think animal liberation, think straight edge, think mid 90´s and mix the sound of EARTH CRISIS and STRIFE. Add great production, political lyrics and superb artwork and you get “The quiet dance”. ANCHOR is one of those bands you want to follow, they’re already one of the most talked-about bands in the scene and the journey has just begun…

ANCHOR at MySpace

Review by Micke Persson

Another year

ANOTHER YEAR
Moments don’t last (MCD)
Monument

I really enjoyed the selftitled debut MCD on Monument, in fact I placed it as one of my top records of 2005. Now, three years later their new MCD arrives. The band have made countless of changes in their line up since the start and the biggest dissapointment was when their old singer left the band. Their original guitarplayer Marcus took over the mic and I knew he could use his throat since he sang in both LAST HOPE and EYES SHUT back in the days. But I really liked the voice of Andreas Schultz and thought that he would be too hard to replace. Well, the first preview of this “new” ANOTHER YEAR could be heard on last years split 7” with DEATH IS NOT GLAMOROUS and I was really blown away! Since then I’ve been waiting for more and here it comes! Three brand new songs plus both tracks from the split are on this piece of wax. If you dig bands like COMEBACK KID and CHAMPION this ep is really worth checking out. We’re still talking fast melodic hardcore and we’re still talking about one of Swedens finest!

ANOTHER YEAR at MySpace

Review by Micke Persson

Treasurfest

Perhaps the head should say "IGNITE" instead since they were the only band I saw of all the bands that played during this two day event. I went to Örebro with the intention of catching three bands; DEAD REPRISE whom I missed due to getting there late, DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR whom I missed when I was out eating just before the main attraction IGNITE were going to play.

IGNITE were great as always, mixaing old songs with new material and a few covers. Zoli always have great things to say on stage, and even if I don't agree with him every time his "speaches" are someting different than the standard preaching at shows.

A few observations and thoughts:

1. A stage dive means diving from the stage, not setting up camp and staying there forever.

2. A lesson in history: UNIFORM CHOICE is one of the best hardcore bands ever. Look them up if you don't know them already.

3. The scene today is very young. We, the old ones, are responsible to make sure that what makes hardcore special i passed on to the younger kids. At the moment hardcore is in danger of becomming just another genre of music.

4. IGNTIE is great!

5. Treasurefest is a good thing, even though they don't book that many bands that appeal to me personally. I hope they will be back again next year with an even better show.

NFG vs. ISHC

NEW FOUND GLORY

Tip of the iceberg (CD-ep)

Bridge 9

NEW FOUND GLORY is one of those bands that I have never even given a chance, but with this promo arriving in the mail it was impossible to avoid them any further. This CD contains three original songs of their own, and also three cover songs. The NFG-originals are very catchy in a pop.hardcore sort of way, nice tempo changes and good choruses. A lot better than I thought and listenable for sure, but still not as good as LIFETIME or early SAVES THE DAY. The three covers where a surprise, "No reason why" (GORILLA BISCUITS), "Here we go again" (SHELTER) and "Cut the tension" (LIFETIME) are covered and done okay, very true to the original versions. I don't know the motivation behind the covers but I hope young kids take note and check out the original versions. Perhaps NFG will inspire a new generation of hardcore kids?

No lyrics included so I guess they're not worth reading? For those who don't know ISHC is NEW FOUND GLORY switching instruments, playing hardcore in an 80's kind of way, NYHC style. But more important to their concept is their roles as superheroes of hardcore and I guess that's what separates them from other joke bands, they have a full concept which the follow.

Musically this is alright but I don't care for the fun side of this. I wasn't around for CRUCIAL YOUTH, but I remember GOOD CLEAN FUN very well and enjoyed it. For those who weren't around for either of those bands ISHC might be fun but personally it feels like I have been through this before. I'll listen to this on occasion for the music however.

No lyrics included so I guess they're not worth reading? Thank god the music is of better quality, old school hardcore that definitely borrows a thing or two from NYHC. SICK OF IT ALL comes to mind a lot. There's lots of variation, faster songs like the title track, but also slower songs with more groove, "Diabolic boggie" for instance. Good sing a longs as well, so this record pretty much have it all.

I couldn't get into the lyrics at all. I just don't care for scenerelated lyrics. They're supposed to be funny I guess, but they're not to me. "Baltic sea for life"? Come on! This is where this record fails, and it's too bad beacause the music isn't bad at all.

CRUSHING CASPARS at MySpace

From the land of the rising sun...

GORDON IVY & THE JAYBIRDS

Happy couples never last (CD)

Akashic / Cock Suck

A few weeks ago I found a package from Japan when I came home from work, very surprising but welcomed. When I discovered what was inside the package I was even more excited, the new record from GORDON IVY & THE JAYBIRDS, a band that I really like. I found them last year when randomly looking through sites at MySpace and fell for them instantly.

It's been a long time since I heard hardcore done with the same raw intensity that these guys have. Any fan of youth crew och 80's hardcore will enjoy this.

At times it's a bit difficult to hear what the singer is screaming but it doesn't really matter. To cut it short: This is hardcore and nothing else. With influences from the early 80's they rush their way through eight songs plus a cover of "Pay to cum". It's all done with skills, no frills and a good sense of humor (or what else can you say about a band that comes up with the songtitle "Take your god out of my peanutbutter"?). All in all this is one of the best new bands out of the US at the moment and I'm glad I got this CD because they're new to me, but certainly a band that I hope to hear more from soon. This is probably the best release from Reflections in a long time.

By the way, this MCD is originally two 7's. If you like straight up hardcore you'd be wise to check thos, or this MCD, out.

BAD REACTION at MySpace

Set The Alarm

SET THE ALARM

Demo 2008 (CD-r)

-

There is something wrong with this world according to SET THE ALARM from Stockholm. I agree, I think that there is a problem when humanity and sympathy are no longer to be found and I'm sure everyone in this world would agree to that as well. The intentions aren't bad at all but I feel that thay are a bit vague and that they need to sharpen their tone to go for an all out attack.

Musically they sound very influenced by the Rivalry stable of bands, especially ANOTHER BREATH comes to mind. It's second division stuff compared to the bigger names in the genre, but then again; it's just a demo, a first attempt at greatness that didn't make it all the way, so we should give them another chance. From GSR I usually expect toughguy hardcore but when I popped this record in my CD-player it turned out sounding completely different from what I had expected. MAKE IT COUNT remind me of fellow germans BLACK FRIDAY '29, deeply rooted in NYHC, sometimes fast and aggressive, sometimes slower mosh parts, but at all times hard. There's a few melodic guitars which they manage to incoorporate in a good way. They cover BATTERY, nowhere near as good as the DC legends but it's cool that they acknowledge a great band that seems to be forgotten by many.

I'm not really into the lyrics which seems to deal with the hardcore scene a lot. They have created quite a stirr with these five songs and they have together with ANGERS CURSE and LIONS DEN been named the future of swedish hardcore. I'll admitt that this demo is good, but it's not spectacular. They sort of do the same thing as INTERNAL AFFAIRS, short, fast songs with a lot of mosh as well, but not with the edge and full out attack that IA does. Johan has a really hard voice but it sounds like a controlled anger, i'd like to hear him furious, as if he was out of his mind and just about to rip someones head off. I remember thinking the same thing when he sang for CASTAWAY. Live they have everything that I wish they would have on record as well which makes me think that there is a lot of potential.

Anyway, the songs are good and from what I hear the 7' that they have recently recorded will be even better. If that is true it will be one of the records to look forward to during the second half of 2008, and pehaps then they will be the future of swedish hardcore.

BALANCE at MySpace

Crime in stereo

CRIME IN STEREO

Crime in stereo is dead (CD)

Bridge 9

I have never been a fan of CRIME IN STEREO, to be honest I have never even given them a fair chance. With the new full length sent to me by nice people a Bridge 9 I am finally able to form an opinion based on actually sitting down and listening to a full record. The up tempo songs on Crime in stereo is dead are not bad at all, and with the pop catchyness combined with hardcorepunk they create something that I'm sure will strike a chord with a lot of young kids in the scene. Moodfull songs for sure, I especially like the song "Small skeletal" which is rocking and packed with emotion. Give this record a few listens before you pss your judgement, it grows and is at it's best when everything else is put on hold and you take the time to sit down with the lyrics in your hands. I am now, after listening to this record in the process of becomming a fan of CRIME IN STEREO.

CRIME IN STEREO MySpace

LKPG back on the map!

LIONS DEN
Demo 2008
-

LIONS DEN is a part of the new wave of swedish hardcore that has started to make an imprint in the past few months. It's been a long time since so many bands emerged and actually delivered quality demo recordings. LIONS DEN is good at what they do, plying hardcore in the vain of NO WARNING and GUNS UP! but could certainly do with better vocals. It's not that the vocals are bad it's just that they don't fit the music. If the vocals sounded more like old NYHC bands I would probably be sold, now I just feel that it's a shame.

I got this demo for free at a show in Örebro in January. It's such a good thing to do, make cheap demos and hand them out for free so that people will be able to listen to the music. I compliment them for such an awesome initiative and recommend other bands to take notes.

Londons hardcore

KNUCKLEDUST
Promises Comfort Fools
GSR (CD)

I have never been a huge fan of the bands on the GSR roster. Occasionally they have released records that have appealed to me but for the most part I have been fairly uninterested. KNUCKLEDUST have been at it for a while now and I have to admit they are good at what they do, sounding like they’re just emerged from the mean streets of London on to the stage. There is definetly charm in their music and even though I have yet to see them on stage I can imagine that it’s a rather entertaining experience. Compared to earlier stuff there is still a strong NYHC influence but (think MADBALL) but they have developed a sound of their own, with songs that will appeal to both hardcore kids and metal heads.

This is my favourite release of the batch that GSR sent me a while ago, even though I have problems getting into the lyrics. In the past their records have sounded pretty much the same from start to finish, New Lexicon on the other hand is way more intresting, there are more melodic parts and nice changes in tempo with songs that are raging fast and a few slower ones, all done in an aggressive way with an edge that brings BLACK FALG to mind.

Self reflecting lyrics that are very well written are always cool. As a person who's first language isn't english I actually had to look up a few of words in this booklet. Anyway it's really great to see the large number of different references in the lyrics and it's obvious that a lot of thought has gone in to them. Pick this up and don't miss these guys when they tour. I haven't seen them yet, but hopefully this coming fall.

Paint It Black Myspace

UK punks

Down And Outs

Friday nights - monday mornings (CD)

Dead And Gone

I don't know if there is such a thing as a typical Dead And Gone band considering that their roster consists of BLACK FRIDAY '29, DEAH IS NOT GLAMOROUS, DIRTY MONEY, DEAL WITH IT and that they in the past have released record by CHAMPION and DAMAGE CONTROL. However, with that in mind I still wouldn't expect them to sign a band like DOWN AND OUTS, but why not? I still like this band, melodic punk with great sing alongs is always welcomed. They mke me think of the swedish band BOMBSHELL ROCKS and their later stuff. This record will probably appeal to a lot of people, but perhaps not to the most fundamentalist hardcore kids. On the other hand they have one of the most active hardcore scenes in the country with DEAD REPRISE as it favourite sons (even though they're not from there originally). Since their previous record they have stepped up a notch and are now signed with GSR, one of the leading labels in Europe. The band has from the start been faithful to it's misson of playing hardcore with the emphasis on hard and to create dance floor mayham. Live they're often a treat, but listning to them on record doesn't match that experience, it's to much of the same thing over and over with vocals that that pretty much sound the exact same way throughout the whole record. There are definitely a few good fast parts, breakdowns and sing alongs which makes this record one that is about, or just above, average.

The layout looks good and the lyrics are well written with a few cool metaphores which I always appreciate.

Dead Reprise Myspace

The legendary NYHC documentary released on DVD

That's right, the NYHC documentary has now been released on DVD. The show was great and I felt excited to se so many young kids at the show. I haven't seen DM since then even though the have played in Sweden a number of times so I was looking forward to seing them in Gothenburg this past sunday, even if I'm not a huge fan of their last four records. They played at the venue Trädgårn which had been sold out for some time and it was a good and friendly atmosphere. However, as a fan of their older stuff and not as much of their newer material I didn't get my moneys worth, but I didn't expect that either. Highlights of the evening was "Finnegans wake", "Boys on the docks", "John Law", "Skinhead", "Barroom hero" and "Curse of a fallen soul".

It's evident that DM no longer is band for just punks but for all sorts of people but I think that they in process have lost many of their older fans. The skins were nowhere to be found, the "hardcore youths" must have stayed at home and while there were a few punks at the show there weren't as many as I had expected.

rotting out

When I ordered the demo from the US band ROTTING OUT they were nice enough to send me two extra copies on CD. This issue is no different than previous issues which is comfortable as you know what you get when ordering it. Interviews with 108, GORILLA BISCUITS, CHAMPION, THE GEEKS and BREAKTHROUGH (more like a profile) are included and they’re all good, my favourite being the one with Rob 108. I have often felt that the review section of Start Today have been the week link and I guess that’s still the case but it’s improving. What I on the other hand admire is the passion that seems to go in to making this zine and Bottled Up, it’s kids like Jeff that make hardcore such a great thing.

If you have any of the other issues and like it there is no reason why not to check out this one as well.

VOICE OF A GENERATION – A CRUCIAL ZINE FOR CRUCIAL TIMES #2

This issue is all about the awesome band SPORTSWEAR, one of my favourites for sure. It comes with a limited SPORTSWEAR 7’ and features an interview of great length (for a hardcore fanzine) with the Norwegian giants of youth crew hardcore. The interview is done with Peter and covers most of his time in hardcore (not just SPORTSWEAR). Peter and Arne, the makers of the zine mentions that they didn’t want to edit the interview, which I really think they should have done as it at times comes of as a chat between friends. It is however still a very interesting read.

There are a few reviews, and I still wonder if Peter and Arne have exact similar taste in music since they seem to be writing the reviews together. It seems very strange to me, but whatever works for them I guess…

ONE KIND WORD #2

ONE KIND WORD comes with a 7’ compilation featuring GET THE MOST, GO FOR BROKE, CINDER and COMMON CAUSE. Those bands are interviewed in the zine after a similar formula, and it’s above average interviews but not great in any sense, standard but done well. There is also an interview with Jon Roa which in my opinion is more interesting, much thanks to his answers.

The zine looks good and I like the concept of a zine combined with a 7’ so I’ll look forward to future issues. If the quality of the writings is improved it could very well turn out great.

Modern Life Is War

MODERN LIFE IS WAR
Midnight in America
Equl Vision (CD)

MODERN LIFE IS WAR let med down with their previous album, Witness. It simply lacked many of the qualities that I appreciated in their debut My Love, My Way and it’s basically been collecting dust the past year, although I am aware that many people rate it as their best album. Midnight in America is a step in the right direction and with “These mad dogs of glory” they have that anthem-like song that you’ll keep hearing over and over again inside your head and that was something Witness didn’t have in my opinion.

Far from beautiful, Midnight in America is as expected an emotion filled experience, at times very aggressive and chaotic, at other times more passionate, never stagnant. Progression has definitely taken place over the past years, from more melodically driven hardcorepunk towards today’s sound that is more aggressive and less straight forward. Now they’re broken up and they will be missed. However, the decision probably came at the right time, three albums is a lot in the hardcore scene.

http://www.myspace.com/modernlifeiswar

One Voice

ONE VOCIE
Break Free (7’)
Crucial Response

I very much enjoyed their demo and this 7’ continues along the same path, very energetic hardcore all done in a very traditional way, as far as lyrics, layout and music goes. Instead they are still playing in the second division but with some fine polish (especially lyric wise) they should be able to step it up next time around and play with the bigger boys.

Any kid into youth crew will like ONE VOICE, that’s for sure, but next time I’d like to see them even more powerful, “in your face” and with a sharper pen.

http://www.myspace.com/onexvoice2006

The Kind That Kills / Anchor

THE KIND THAT KILLS / ANCHOR
Split
Monument (7’)

I guess THE KIND THAT KILLS and ANCHOR are the two biggest hardcore bands from Sweden at the moment, definitely the two hardest working bands anyway, so to see them releasing a split together isn’t all that surprising.

THE KIND THAT KILLS have a formula of their own, very melodic driven hardcore with which along with Peters characteristic vocals have become a road to success. The only thing missing is that one song, one hit that becomes their trademark. As I’m writing this I’m one week away from seeing them live again, which in my opinion is a greater experience than listening to them on record.

ANCHOR is without a doubt the rising star of Swedish hardcore, with tours all over the world in the works. I wasn’t to into their first MCD, a few good moments but overall to metallic for my taste. My feelings toward these two songs are similar. I like the intro to the first song which takes me back more than ten years, as well as the faster parts of the second song. I’d like to see them embracing the old school elements a bit more, not to go over the top of course but just enough to keep me interested. Political lyrics as expected but without depth, but I guess that it’s very difficult to go in depth with just a few words.

http://www.myspace.com/thekindthatkills

http://www.myspace.com/xanchorx

Commitment Crew

COMMITMENT CREW
Hisingen (7’)
Crucial Response

It’s nice to be writing so many reviews of Swedish bands, and especially band that are friends of mine. COMMITMENT CREW is from the city of Gothenburg, as am I so have been able to see them play live a number of times, and I bought their demo when it first was released. It’s cool to see a band evolve from being, hm… not so impressive into something that I can enjoy. These guys are very passionate about what they are doing and they are in every way honest and sincere kids so I am glad to see them being appreciated.

Hisingen is all about old Boston hardcore and I guess that they to those not in the know sound like a joke, but I think they pull off this style of hardcore very well. In the past couple of years I haven’t been able to listen to melodic hardcore in the same way that I used to, or perhaps it’s has been because the lack of good bands? PERMANENT is one of the few bands playing this sort of hardcore that makes me want to go off. These two songs fit very well with the songs on their LP, not the best two songs that they have done perhaps but okay.

Speaking of melodic hardcore; LIFETIME and KID DYNAMITE have sort of made a resurrection in the past few years (of course with LIFETIMEs reunion as icing on the cake) and RESONANCE is yet another band that gets in line to salute these legends of New Jersey hardcore. Nothing to spectacular, but not bad either. A few nice metaphors and good writings overall make up lyrics that are well above average.

http://www.myspace.com/permanent

http://www.myspace.com/resonanceva

Dirty Money

DIRTY MONEY
No Escaping This (MCD)
Dead And Gone

With the bands coming out of the UK during the last couple of years I wasn’t expecting much at all, but this blows me away. A great display of aggression and rhythm and certainly nice signs of progression since the demo (which is included on the CD, seven songs all together).

CHILDREN OF THE CORE

The documentary CHILDREN OF THE CORE is finally out. I would however like to share my view of what hardcore is supposed to be about. In my book the most important aspect of hardcore, or any music for that matter, is that it should be fun. For the most part these days hardcore is "okay", nothing more, nothing less. I'd like to see kids go off at shows in an spontanous act of excitment and energy, just for the fun of it. If we're able to get a positive message across at the same time that's even better.

One other aspect that I like to think of as uniqe for hardcore is that it's a movement of equals, we don't build up walls; we break them down!

A few weeks ago someone posted a video on STOCKHOLM HARDCORE that in my mind summarized a lot of what hardcore means to me. I had never seen this video before but I was at the show and remember it well. The basic setup: LAST HOPE play "Hardcore pride" by TEN YARD FIGHT and it's open mic. Enjoy: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Vo_l7MVBivA /Marcus Källman

In the spirit of Christmas...

...
