Looking back at 2007

I'm not as up to speed as I once was when it comes to hardcore so that's one of my new years resolutions for 2008; to get back in the know. In other words: If you find this list crappy I promise you that my list will be more interesting next year. Anyway, here goes; my favourite record of 2007:

SOPHIE ZELMANI - Memory loves you

So tender and beautiful, her voice is truly one to die for. Memory Loves You is her best record so far. She is an artist with a lot of integrity and she deserves respect. Sophie is my favourite artist 0f 2007.

Other records I'd like to mention:

GATANS LAG - Alla Hängda Rövares Själar

INTERNAL AFFAIRS - Deadly Vision

MODERN LIFE IS WAR - Midnight in America

MONEYBROTHER - Mount Pleasure

BABYSHAMBLES - Shotters Nation

PERMANENT - Sink Swim

RED HANDED - Wounds Remain

SOCIAL PRESSURE - Bad Mentality

TRUE COLORS - Focus on the Light

GET THE MOST - Moment in Time e.p.

Just a brief reminder of what hardcore is all about...

I don't want to point fingers at anyone, nor do I want to lose myself to pointless nostalgia. I would however like to share my view of what hardcore is supposed to be about. In my book the most important aspect of hardcore, or any music for that matter, is that it should be fun. For the most part these days hardcore is "okay", nothing more, nothing less. I'd like to see kids go off at shows in an spontanous act of excitment and energy, just for the fun of it. If we're able to get a positive message across at the same time that's even better.

One other aspect that I like to think of as uniqe for hardcore is that it's a movement of equals, we don't build up walls; we break them down!

A few weeks ago someone posted a video on STOCKHOLM HARDCORE that in my mind summarized a lot of what hardcore means to me. I had never seen this video before but I was at the show and remember it well. The basic setup: LAST HOPE play "Hardcore pride" by TEN YARD FIGHT and it's open mic. In the spirit of Christmas...

... We would like to make you aware of Fat Wreck's free Christmas/Hanukkah compilation "HANUK-COMP - From The Dreidel To The Grave", greased with not fewer than 7 previously unreleased songs featuring acts such as The Loved Ones, Only Crime and Rise Against. Not to shabby.

Also, punkrock band The Humpers features their contribution to Christmas with "Run, Run Rudolph" (it might have a few years on it's neck, but it's still awesome) on their myspace.
